When looking at what our estimated kid will look like, it might help to recall what Erin and I look like:

Chris! Erin!

Erin and I were browsing the "what if they mated" photos on Conan O'Brien's website, and we were curious about what would happen if we mated. We came up with the following estimate of what our kids will look like:

Evidently, in Canada, landlords are allowed to enter apartments and inspect for cleanliness. We are being given notice by our building manager that our apartment is insufficiently tidy. She noted "accumulation of papers," by which I assume she means my research materials which had been piled around my desk. She also mentioned "grocery bags lying around," by which I assume she meant the bags of recyclables in the open closet next to the front door. I stood silent and perplexed while she mentioned these complaints. Before I determined how I felt about being cited for un-neatness in my private apartment for which I apparently pay an extravagant rent each month, she assured me "this is legal here." Fuckin Canada. Just look at their damn happy money:

In case you're wondering, this is what our hopelessly unkempt apartment looks like (we got all of our furniture at Ikea):

This is a great article on Trent Lott's early political career and its emphasis on segregation. The most interesting part, to me, is the text of this flyer connected to Strom Thurmond's campaign in 1948:

Fliers with sample ballots for the state Democratic ticket that year screamed a white supremacist call to arms against President Harry S. Truman and his "vicious anti-Southern program." A vote for Truman, the fliers warned, would mean "anti-lynching and anti-segregation proposals will become the law of the land and our way of life in the South will be gone forever."
Lynching is the "way of life" of the South? I thought back then it was agriculture...
